The male members of Pen Dalton’s family were printers in the London newspaper industry. Her work is embedded in patriarchal, binary power relations: between fathers and daughters, black and white, ink and paper. After many years lecturing/writing/researching art she has turned to painting, employing mediums and techniques expressively analogue to human relationships.

Most of the paintings are acrylics with printed ‘Tengujo’ paper. Each painting explores the way that art can suggest the vast territory that lies in between binary oppositions. Deploying formal techniques of art: blending, merging, half-tones, chiaroscuro, sfumato; Pen explores the aesthetic reconciliation of power relations; in analogic relations to those of culture, class and gender.
