Oil has been Jose Moura’s primary medium since first starting to create art. It is a familiar medium that carries the weight of tradition while offering endless possibilities. Although experimenting with materials such as acrylic and painted on wood, he finds himself returning to oil for its richness and ability to convey drama and atmosphere. Jose’s artistic process begins with photography, sketches and memories serving as the starting points for his compositions and he draws inspiration from videos, texts and anything that captures his interest and fits well into his work, particularly when it comes to light.
His work explores the intersections of culture, politics, spirituality, and everyday rural life, contrasting these themes with the current era of technological advancement and the overvaluation of the material world. He is drawn to symbolism to convey these stories, using images that suggest something deeper than mere surface appearance. Through colour and form, Jose aims to evoke emotions, memories, and rhythms of these overlooked narratives.
