Commissioned by Artillery CIC and Barbican for the Walthamstow Garden Party in partnership with William Morris Gallery.
Graduating with an MA in Islamic Art from the Princes School, Zarah Hussain’s practice is a visual examination of how spirituality, technology, and art connect. Establishing a creative language that reflects both the aesthetic traditions of traditional Islamic design and modern Western society, she skilfully integrates the pattern-making abilities of conventional mathematics with modern art across a variety of genres.
This has included large scale time-based animations, where constant flows and graduation of coloured light encapsulates and entrances the viewer, and wall-based reliefs created from identical cast resin pieces over the zinc-white surface of each she has painted bold blocks or frameworks of graduating colour.
In addition to previously illuminating WMG, Zarah's animation 'Zellige' was part of 2023 Guy Fawkes Night immersive light spectacular projected onto the Grade II listed Waltham Forest Town Hall. She regularly exhibits internationally and in 2017 was awarded the Lumen Prize (People’s Choice).
